Learning the correct Phonic Sound

Learning the correct Phonic Sound

In my nine years experience as a Montessori Directress, the major problem I faced while handling kids of age 2.5- 6 years is the phonic sound. We introduce the alphabets using its sounds at the very initial stage and parents at home teach the “name” of alphabets which results to great confusion for the children.

Parents, this is a serious problem which you should consider when your child starts going to school. First of all, you should be aware of what system does your child’s school follow. Most of the schools in Pakistan follow the phonic system in introducing the alphabets so it’s always good for parents to learn the phonic sounds themselves as it would be easier for you to help your child with his homework and not confusing him. Always keep track of their syllabus and you should know when they are introducing the names of alphabets.

Have a look at the table below for better understanding between phonic sounds (alphabet sounds) and alphabet names:

AlphabetNameSound
Aay‘a’ as in apple
Bbee‘bu’ as in ball
Csee‘kha’ as in cat
Ddee‘du’ as in dog
Eee‘eh’ as in elephant
Feff‘fff’ as in fish
Gjee‘gu’ as in goat
Hech‘hhhhh’ as in house
Iai‘ee’ as in igloo
Jjay‘ju’ as in jug
Kkay‘ku’ as in kitten
Lel‘lll’ as in ladder
Mem‘mmm’ as in monkey
Nen‘nnn’ as in nest
Oow‘oa’ as in orange
Ppi‘pu’ as in pencil
Qkyu‘qua’ as in quilt
Rarr‘rrr’ as in rat
Sess‘sss’ as in sun
Ttee‘tu’ as in tent
Uyuu‘uhh’ as in umbrella
Vvee‘vu’ as in van
Wdoubleyu‘wu’as in watch
Xex‘x’ as in x-ray
Ywai‘ya’ as in yo-yo
Zzee‘zzz’ as in zebra

Note that, Uttering the names of any object repeatedly will help you learn its first sound more. The alphabet ‘X’ has no sound but x itself. While learning, make a list of different words which begins with the sound you are learning and read them aloud repeatedly. e.g apple, axe, ant etc When the alphabet is in capital, you are supposed to just say its name but when it is in small letter, it means you have to say its sound, since small letters represents the sounds of the capital letters.

Also, I plan to add the audio clip for each sound, so - stay tuned! (0:

Remember: Practice makes man perfect.

Advice: Introduce these sounds when your child starts speaking since phonic sounds will help your child read.

In this blog, I’ve tried my best to help parents and teachers proper sounds of the alphabets. This is a genuine effort to help you teach your kids or even learn what you haven’t learnt in your school life. Who knows, you will also improve your reading.

Best of Luck!

  1. Mam Naveeka ! you have put in great efforts after personal research done for nearly nine long

years. As per your observation PREPARING TODDLERS FOR SCHOOLING the parents have to

play major role to train the kids at their residents ,but as you say how many parents are

perfect in phonics to correct/train their kids. Here the parents have to attend the school

to get themselves perfect in" PHONICS".

Yea one more thing how many parents go through your blog on computers even if they

have one how about the power which plays hide and seek. Hope not all educated people

admit their children in good standard schools. Some poor and illiterates also prefer to give

good education to their children then what about these peoples PHONICS.

So I think you should give a thought to this problem also.

  2. Mr. M.V.P Rao,

My issue is only with parents who wants to teach their kids at home, but doesn't really know "how to" So they make this blunder of confusing kids with something they haven't learnt at all. But parents from middle class and upper class nowadays participate a lot in their children's studies , and these families have computers as well where they can get help about phonics easily and learning from their child's teachers , won't cost them at all as it won't take months to learn phonics.
Regarding those parents who can't afford to have computer or learn phonics, they can always learn 'again' from their kids' teachers as it won't cost them at all. But I doubt that children who belong to that family ever go to a school where phonic system is being followed. Incase they follow, the solution has been given to you already. Learn from their teachers. That's the solution I can suggest to this problem. Hope I answered your question.

  3. Hmm, given the circumstances, this is quite an interesting and approachable solution, provided how "bad" a parent want their child to learn the best.
